A dual diagnosis is often given to people who have bipolar disorder because of their tendency to gravitate to substances that aren't healthy. Marijuana, alcohol, pills and other drugs are all part of the dual diagnosis. Using these crutches can cause further complications with the bipolar brewing in your brain. I noticed early on in my diagnosis, that when I drank, I got extra drunk. I would say things to people that I didn't mean. I would engage in risky behavior in general and sexually. Having bipolar is hard enough, so when you add substances, things get even harder. If you're experiencing troubles with your dual diagnosis, I suggest keeping a journal on your behavior to monitor that behavior versus your sober behavior. This way, you can analyze the difference between sobriety and the madness. Very recently, my son died due to alcohol and his bipolar disorder. His story is on the last page of the blog, as it is right now. If you have a dual diagnosis, please stop using whatever substance you are using besides your regular meds. It could mean the difference between life and death.
